The only computers I had access to as a kid ran DOS, and I didn’t get a computer of my own until I was 18. It was a secondhand IBM running PC-DOS. So when I got exposed to UNIX in college in the late 1990s, I was hooked. I’ve been running a mix of GNU/Linux and BSD on my personal computers ever since. It’s certainly more effort than just making do with a Windows PC or a Mac, but it’s more interesting. If I was into cars, it would be like driving a muscle car with a stick shift.
