Fucking Tech Recruiters (Again)

concerning pay transparency in tech recruiting and its lack thereof

WARNING: This is a rant. Read at your own risk.

Are you a tech recruiter? If your cold email to me doesn’t include a salary range I will mark it as spam and blackhole your employer’s entire domain. Don’t think for a moment that I won’t do it; I’ve left my own mother on read ever since she falsely accused me and my wife of trying to take advantage of her after my father died. I will be no kinder to you since there are neither blood ties nor a semblance of fond memories to shield you from the full extent of my wrath.

Why am I taking a hard line on this?

Granted, these rates usually include “up to” in fine print, implying that these are their best offers instead of a starting point for negotiation. Nevertheless, they’re still more honest than the average tech job posting.

You know damn well what I’m talking about. I’m talking about postings that specify a bachelor’s degree and five years of experience for an entry level position. I’m talking about “full-stack” postings where you’re expected to be the tech equivalent of a one-man band and do the work of at least half a dozen people but only get paid one salary. I’m talking about postings where you’re expected to be familiar with Rust, Go, JavaScript, Node, Kubernetes, and be able to implement quicksort from scratch on a whiteboard while people stare at your ass and wonder if you’re wearing briefs or boxers. After all of that, your day-to-day consists of Visual Basic, Excel, and fucking PowerPoint.

For all of that, the bare fucking minimum you can do is provide a salary range in your job postings so that people don’t go through all of the hazing rituals that tech hiring has become only to receive a “competitive offer” where the gross salary is ten grand less than their current net. This right here is why your candidates fucking ghost, and your ghosting problem is entirely self-inflicted and well-deserved. Karma isn’t a bitch; you’re the bitch here, and karma owns your ass.

Why am I ranting about this? This shit happened to me once, and I’d sooner go back to scrubbing toilets and scraping baby barf off the floor at the local supermarket than put up with such a demeaning process ever fucking again. Maybe a recruiter will read this and have a “come to Jesus” moment. And maybe a less experienced techie will read this and learn to protect themselves against this kind of bullshit.

Either way, this is not an “ask” if you’re a tech recruiter. This is a hard, non fucking negotiable requirement: pay transparency or GTFO. You and your staffing firm only get one chance when you send me a cold email. Don’t fuck it up.
